This article was originally published on the Public Health England screening blog.

The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) first met in July 1996.

The UK NSC advises ministers and the NHS in the 4 UK countries about all aspects of screening and supports implementation of screening programmes. It is recognised and respected as a pre-eminent international body.

Today, we publish a report summarising the work of the UK NSC over the past 25 years.

Dr Robert Sherriff worked with inspirational public health leaders Sir Muir Gray and Dr Pat Troop to set up the new national body back in the mid-1990s, leading the development of the first set of criteria for appraising the viability of population screening programmes.

Dr Sherriff looks back at the committee’s achievements over the past 25 years and explains why it is needed now as much as ever in a UK NSC blog article today.

Please remember to subscribe to the UK NSC blog if you have not already done so.
